9 -12 AUGUST 2003, EUROPEAN ARTS IN EDUCATION - COOPERATION OVER BORDERS

The conference will be held on in Helsinki and Espoo, Finland. The venue is Hanasaari, the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre. The theme of the conference is "How to use drama, theatre, dance, music and visual arts in young people's education in collaboration with refugees and immigrants". The aim is especially to find new ways to benefit and learn from the peaceful coexistence with the different artistic and cultural backgrounds and knowledge that are presented by refugees and immigrants in European countries, USA and Canada. The presenters of the congress will share their experiences and cases to all participants and work then also in small groups developing their ideas together with colleagues of other art forms as well.

The conference is organised by UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation FIDEA - Finnish Drama/Theatre Education Association IDEA - International Drama/Theatre and Education Association InSEA - International Society for Education through Arts ISME - International Society for Music Education in co-operation with Hanasaari - The Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre, Espoo, Finland.

Executive Committee of IDEA had meeting in 7.-9.4.02 in Exeter (UK).
All the members of EC, AC and GMC attended, only the secretary of GMC couldn't come.

The next IDEA General Meeting will be 20 -27 March 2003 in Montpellier (France).

Activities In 2001:

In Rapla (Estonia) was 10 -11 February 2001 "Non-traditional amateur theatre festival DISHARMONIA", organised by Mitteteatteri Syndmus. There were 120 theatre, dance and fine arts students from Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. Tintti Karppinen was invited to direct one of the six workshops, each of which produced a public performance inspired by in the installations, made by the art students.

In Budapest (Hungary) was international festival MAYDAYS 25.-27. 5. 01. The theme was Drama: a possible means for treating moral, social and educational problems - workshop for drama-teachers of Eastern European countries. It was organised by HUDEA (Hungarian Drama in Education Association).

There were 20 drama teachers from Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Yugoslavia and Austria. From EDERED was invited President Maire Saure (Finland) and from IDEA Vice President Tintti Karppinen, who had also a workshop for all participants. The theme of it was: How to use drama process in handling every day life problems and conflicts.


In BERGEN (Norway) was 2-8 July IDEA 2001 , 4th World Congress for Drama/Theatre and Education. Playing betwixt and between.
The Congress director was Aud Bergraf Saebo and in the organising committee FIDEA was presented by Hannu Heikkinen, who was in charge of Special Interest Groups (SIGs).

In the congress there were about 1000 drama teachers and students from all continents - 52 of them were from Finland! The EC of FIDEA was presented by Annemari Untamala (president) and Riitta Kurkela, Pipsa Teerijoki, Tintti Karppinen and Mari Paasonen, who was also one of the Finnish congress assistants (asp). The programme was very versatile and on the high level.

The EC of IDEA had a meeting already before the congress to prepare the General Meeting, which was during the congress in different days. GM accepted new members and reports of the officers of EC and AC. We heard also reports of many member associations and discussed both of the ongoing and the coming (Canada -04) congresses, as well as other projects. New members of EC, AC and GMC were also elected.

Regional Meeting of Experts of Latin America and the Caribbean on Art Education, organised by UNESCO, was in Uberaba (Brazil) 15. -20. October. Larry O'Farrell, Liliana Galvan and Tintti Karppinen were delegates of IDEA. Co-operation in Arts in Education -project, which started -99 with InSEA (The International Society of Education through Art) and ISME (International Society for Music Education) was continued during this congress.

Tintti Karppinen had an introduction of art education in Finland and she worked in the group of theatre and dance, which produced for UNESCO a recommendation for teaching plan of arts education to be used in Latin American and Caribbean countries in ministries of education and culture as well as community officers.

Tereza Wagner, the delegate of UNESCO, asked Tintti Karppinen to start negotiations so that the next European Arts in Education Congress, August -03, could be held in Finland. The organisation should be done in co-operation with IDEA, InSEA, ISME, FIDEA and UNESCO. The negotiations with Finnish UNESCO officers in Ministry of Education were started in December -01 and the work continued -02 , when an application for UNESCO was done by FIDEA in February.

DRAMA and THEATRE EDUCATION 2nd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE was 7. - 9. December 2001 in Athens (Greece). There were more than 200 participants. The key note speakers and workshop leaders were from Bosnia, UK, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Israel, Croatia, France, Sweden, Finland, Turkey and - of course - Greece.

Tintti Karppinen had an introduction in the opening ceremony with theme: Life is improvisation - and every day is a first night. Why theatre is a stepchild in the family of arts in school? Her workshop title was: Sociodrama and role plays for understanding and collaboration.
